 Evil Dead: Regeneration
Is the third time the charm for this cult classic movie turned video game?

I just recently got my hands on a preview build of THQ's newest attempt at an Evil Dead game. From what I was able to play, the game play seemed to be far improved from its predecessors. The movement seemed far more responsive and issues like having to find gasoline for your chainsaw have been delightfully eliminated.

The melee action has been improved to include longer combos that let you chain from fists and elbows to the shotgun or chainsaw. Some combos incorporate jump kicks or even cool slow motion chainsaw finishers. The timing on these combos feels right also. It took me a few tries to get it down, but once I did, I felt like there was a certain amount of room for creativity in combat. When it comes to the combo timing, it has more of a Killer Instinct or Tekken feel and less like the Mortal Kombat Dial-A-Combo style.

I'm not sure yet if it is an improvement, but in the latest game, Ash is accompanied by a Deadite midget that reminds me of a bad Joe Pesci impersonator. The banter that goes on between these two is pretty cheesy, but I'm not sure if it's the same kind of cheesy we all love about Ash's character. I haven't seen much of our new sidekick, but I'm hoping he doesn't just come off as annoying.

Of course that could be exactly what the designers are aiming for considering the rough treatment the poor guy receives. Since he's undead, we can basically do anything we want with him. You can literally "kick the baby" and use him to overheat furnaces or jump on the backs of unsuspecting enemies. There is no end to the amount of torture this guy takes.

Unfortunately, from what I saw, the graphics were below par. They did capture the ambiance and feeling of the Evil Dead movies, but the level of detail is much less than what I would expect for this point in the evolutions in the consoles. I did receive an early copy of the game and sources inside THQ have hinted that there have been some significant improvements made between the preview builds and what is being shipped in September. We can only hope.
