The original Dynasty Tactics was a highly acclaimed strategy title, and generally considered the best of the Three Kingdoms titles that Koei has offered. Now, fans of the series can enjoy the work being put into the sequel, Dynasty Tactics 2. With new conditions of victory for each stage, you can be absolutely sure that the difficulty in each scenario will be even higher than the last. Thankfully, Koei has introduced some new features to help you along the way. The first of these is the Tactical Chain System. This places multiple war strategies at your disposal, and upon successful completion of certain conditions, a single military unit will be able to link together multiple war tactics, linking up to ten offensive tactical maneuvers in a row. A new warrior is also included in Dynasty Warriors 2’s storyline – Lu Bu. Known as the “fierce heaven-sent child of a turbulent age”, the traitor of Romance of the Three Kingdoms has a chance to redeem his reputation as a man genuinely engaged in the pursuit of war – not to achieve peace or gain territory, but to prove to all that his power is supreme. Funnily enough, Lu Bu’s daughter is also a character, fighting by her father’s side.
Koei has introduced “Tactics Training Camps” in Dynasty Warriors 2, where you can learn new tactics such as Ally – where the establishment of relations with friendly commanders will give your army the ability to coordinate allied strategies even in the midst of battle. After the game ends, a player’s performance is evaluated on several criteria: ‘number of complete defeats, ‘ number of (tactics) linkages’ and so on. At the conclusion of play, ‘Martial Arts,’ ‘Ingenuity’, and ‘Leadership’ ability values will be evaluated. Based on play results, the PEM ranks the player’s ability, and matches a commander with a similar ability level. The player will then receive items corresponding to that commander. Continuing along the tactics theme, you can go into cities, where there are tactics training schools, streets, villages, and wizards’ houses. You can learn new tactics at the training schools, and engage in conversation on the streets and in the villages with various members of the community. At the hermits’ houses you can get items and receive instruction about rare tactics. It’s not Grand Theft Auto 3, but it does provide a degree of freedom unmatched by the previous Dynasty Tactics. A Quick Explanation of the Tactical Link/Combo System: Tactics alone are powerful attacks, but combining one with other tactics greatly increases its effectiveness. After a unit uses a tactic, the tactic of any allied unit whose requirements have been met will automatically be triggered. This is what is called a Tactical Combo. There are no limits to the number of tactics in a Tactical Combo. - A tactic can be triggered only if it targets the same unit attacked by the previous tactic. - Tactics whose requirements have been met are triggered in Turn order. - Only the first tactic of an Officer’s Tactics Queue will be triggered. - The impact or effect of the tactic increases as the number of tactics in the combo increase. - A tactic can be used only once during a battle. After a tactic is used it is removed from the Officer’s Tactics Queue. A tactic can be restored to the queue, and used again in the same battle if the Officer destroys an enemy unit, or if a special unit heals the Officer’s unit. Choosing to “Link” a tactic against an enemy unit will immobilize that target unit for one turn. The linked tactic is triggered automatically if an allied unit uses a tactic anywhere on the battlefield. The allied unit’s tactic does not have to target the enemy unit that was immobilized by the link. Tactical Combos require an allied unit to trigger the combo sequence. But with the Tactical Chain System, a single officer can unleash more than one tactic in a single turn.
