 Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death
Brian goes hands-on with the cool looking Dredd vs Death game.

I recently got my hands on a near final build of Judge Dredd for the PlayStation 2. Based on the comic of the same name, you live in a huge city, where everyone is a potential criminal. It is up to you to uphold justice, arrest wrong doers, and be the law.

Visually Judge Dredd looks pretty good, if not your standard First Person shooter. Moving at a solid frame rate, and excellent speed, you make your way through the city that is richly detailed and full of color and atmosphere. The game also takes advantage of great lighting as well. The enemies are unique, and range in various forms. The worlds are huge; so if you noticed only 11 levels, don’t fret. Textures aren’t the strongest point of the game, but in the end, the game doesn’t look bad at all.

Two things will set JD apart from other FPS that have become mediocre over time; weapon selection and upholding law and order tendencies. In JD you don’t just go on a kill crazy rampage, you must unarm and arrest citizens who break the law. After apprehending them you give them a sentence and let the justice and prison systems do the rest. Another aspect to note is that you will actually be penalized for killing certain people.

The weapons are some of the coolest and most interesting weapons I’ve seen in a FPS to date. Sure your basic, shedding, machines guns and pistols apply, but it’s when you get the ricochet rifle and many other cool weapons that I won’t spoil for you, is when the fun really begins and creativity inspires.

The multiplayer is unfortunately not online…at least not in the version I was sent. Speaking of multiplayer, the game offers only a few options, and they are all you’ve seen before in the past. It’s obvious that the developers cared more about re-creating the comic rather than death matches, which is still okay in my book.

So far Judge Dredd looks like it has accomplished what it set out to do, which was make a fun, fast paced, action title, that more than makes up for the debacle that was the film. Look for it on shelves in the coming weeks.
