Violent forms of wrestling entertainment have existed underground for years, but surprisingly, only now is a company turning the idea into an interactive format. Eidos Interactive and developer Paradox Development's Backyard Wrestling teams up with one of the most unpopular, forgotten acts in music, Insane Clown Posse, to bring the blood, sweat and tears of a sport usually played behind houses in suburban neighborhoods right to your home!

Involving Insane Clown Posse is nearly enough to write Backyard Wrestling off (why, Eidos, why!), but having spend hands-on time with nearly complete copies of the Xbox and PlayStation 2 revisions, Gaming Age is certain Backyard Wrestling will find its niche.

Don't head into Backyard Wrestling expecting a deep wrestling engine. Although the combat certainly isn't limited to punches and kicks, the action moves at such a frenzied rate the game turns into little more than a button mash much of the time. Put a little effort into learning reversals, however, and fights are made more interesting. But really, the basic combat engine isn't the focus here.

The environments are the real stars of the game. There are few games on the market that could claim to have comparable environmental interaction as Backyard Wrestling. Utilizing the various sharp, heavy and blunt objects found in each stage make for some completely insane fights. In a matter of seconds, players can toss their opponent into a fire, kick 'em in the crotch, and then climb a ladder to drive their foot into the downed wrestler's skull at 60 miles an hour. Ouch.

The single player mode is where new characters and gameplay features are unlocked; surrounding it is a bare-bones storyline where the Insane Clown Posse is allowed to speak at intervals of more than 5 seconds, causing severe headaches and nausea. Versus mode is where the game hits its stride; beating the bloody pulp out of AI is only so thrilling - beating your best friend with a lead pipe rocks.

There's a create-a-wrestler mode thrown in for good measure, but there isn't too much to it and doesn't allow for a whole lot of customization. Compared to the options available in "real" wrestling games, Backyard Wrestling doesn't quite stack up.

Next week Eidos Interactive releases Backyard Wrestling to the masses. Look for Gaming Age's full review soon.
